Confusion over what wisdom is and how one acquires it is as frequent today as it was in Artur Schnabel’s time. He says:
I would say that many of the questions asked [me by students] point to a belief in the existence of what I would call a safe conduct to wisdom, a trust in methods and books and rules to lead to the solution of problems, to settle everything. Also a belief that there is only one solution, one way, one type of experience. (Quoted from The Life of the Creative Spirit, p. 349.)
