Who runs this blog?

  • The Saunterer. That's me, H. Charles Romesburg, Professor in the Department of Environment and Society, Utah State University. As part of my research I saunter through the writings of especially creative people, keeping an eye open for insightful ideas on subjects that are joined with great goodness and creativity. I will in this blog present ideas from the writings of more than three hundred of these creators: painters, scientists, mathematicians, entrepreneurs, writers, poets, naturalists, actors, rock climbers and more. Among the subjects that will be covered: How workers in most every vocation and avocation can work as artists do, creating use, beauty, or both, of rare note. How regularly experiencing wild nature makes us better creators. How it is that the more all forms of life come to be revered, the more creative society will be. Mao Zedong’s plan for saving the world

If they really wanted to save the world, religious and political leaders would take a page from Mao Zedong:

Our plans, work, [and] thinking all should start with the [awareness] that we have a population of 600 million. . . . Here [we] need birth control; it would be great [if we] could lower the birth [rate] a bit. [We] need planned births. I think humanity is most inept at managing itself. It has plans for industrial production . . . [but] it does not have plans for the production of humans. This is anarchism, no government, or organization, no rules. If [we] go on this way, I think humanity will prematurely fall into strife and hasten toward destruction. (Mao Zedong quoted from Just One Child, by Susan Greenhalgh. University of California Press. 2008. p. 46.)

Very interesting thoughts. I have been reading "Return to Middle Kingdom", by Yuan-tsung Chen who gives an amazing description of Mao Zedong. It's an insider's account of the Cultural Revolution that unravels the perplexities of modern Chinese history for the reader. This is a book I am sure you would enjoy as well.
