Who is to say that Mickey Mouse is not Japanese, or that Ronald McDonald is not Chinese? To millions of children who watch Chinese television, “Uncle McDonald” (alias Ronald) is probably more familiar than the mythical characters of Chinese folklore.
(Quoted from page 10 of Golden Arches East: McDonald’s in East Asia (2nd edition), edited by James L. Watson, Stanford University Press, 2006. The passage appears also in Cries of Joy, Songs of Sorrow: Chinese Pop Music and Its Cultural Connotations, by Marc L. Moskowitz, University of Hawaii Press, 2010.)
