In the Saunterer’s mail this morning is the September/October 2010 issue of Best Friends Magazine, and - knowing the 1,001 ways cats have for not being fooled, rejecting pills - we think a suggestion in a reader’s letter to the magazine deserves wider distribution. She is Nancy Delie, of St. Ignatius, Montana, and she says:
I have another approach that has become our “go to” solution. As some meds are not meant to be crushed or dissolved, we have found that by cutting the tip of a syringe off and then pulling the plunger down, it is easy to insert a small amount of tasty canned cat food, then the pill followed by another dab of food. If the pill is to be split into thirds or quarters, it works just as well with the added layers. We have also discovered it best to dispense in small portions, enabling easier swallowing. Looking forward to a small treat of some kind afterward reinforces the fun aspect of the experience for your cat.
