For the people of the Book, both Jews and Christians, exile is the normal and inescapable lot of mankind on Earth. One can go further and say that the myth of exile, in one form or another, lies at the core of all religions, of any genuine religious experience. The fundamental message embedded in religious worship is: our home is elsewhere.
