William Speirs Bruce, member of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-04, realized what did and did not cause loneliness, later writing:
Isolation among the fastnesses of nature does not bring loneliness: that can perhaps be only felt in its full extreme among the busy haunts of men.
