Music, Boethius knew, satisfies our inborn need for harmony:
That which is most knowable is most harmonious; only quantities, magnitudes, forms, essences, are knowable, and the discipline of music concerns itself with essences consisting of related quantities; those related quantities which are easiest to know are the proportions, the essences, and the most harmonious sounds.
