Abstractly, we may explain that synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon of commingling senses. Concretely, Paddy Bostock explains it this way:
Every town leaves its scent-trace in memory, and every memory leads back to some other — a favourite song, the colours of a childhood summer, the taste of a first kiss, the feel of a puppy’s ruff.
