Nearly all writers would agree with Anton Chekhov:
Medicine is my lawful wedded wife, and literature my mistress. When one gets on my nerves, I spend the night with the other. This may be somewhat disorganized, but then again it’s not as boring, and anyway, neither one loses anything by my duplicity. If I didn’t have medicine, I’d never devote my spare time and thoughts to literature.
